Justine Woods’ bespoke tailored collection aims to celebrate Métis identity and challenge the place that Métis culture and indigenous heritage have within present-day Canadian society. The collection showcases traditional Métis hand beaded floral designs, a form of adornment that has been used by Métis people for hundreds of years. The floral designs represent not only the designer’s Métis identity and voice but the voices of all indigenous communities in Canada. Each bead represents an indigenous voice that has been stolen and an indigenous voice that now deserves to be heard. The collection aims to showcase Métis hand beading in a way that is relatable and can be appreciated by both indigenous and non-indigenous people, in order to truly emphasize the beauty and importance of indigenous arts and culture in Canada. With a strong stigma known to be placed on indigenous people, the collection acts as a form of empowerment to indigenous others about the importance of expressing indigenous pride and identity through art and fashion. Thus, hoping to create increased awareness, knowledge and appreciation of indigenous cultures throughout Canada.
